French Drain Solutions: Effective Runoff Management in Shellharbour

Addressing Water Ingress Challenges in Shellharbour

A homeowner in Shellharbour encountered a pressing problem with water ingress that escalated over time. Rainwater from two neighbouring properties, both positioned at a higher elevation, began to seep into the yard and infiltrate beneath the foundation of their home. This unwelcome intrusion caused damage to the flooring, promoted rising damp, and contributed to mould growth within the property, jeopardising the integrity of recent renovations.

How Can You Effectively Detect the Source of Water Ingress?

The water ingress issue originated from both surface runoff and subsurface water descending from the rear and side yards of adjacent properties. In the absence of a robust drainage system to manage this influx, the water was forced to flow beneath the house.

Implementing an Effective Drainage Solution

CS Plumbing developed and installed a gravity-fed French drain system specifically designed to capture and redirect water before it could compromise the home’s foundation.

This project incorporated several crucial components:

  • A French drain system meticulously crafted to collect surface and subsurface water from neighbouring properties, directing it through gravity to a concrete pit.
  • A 100mm PVC pipe extending from the pit to the curb, featuring strategically drilled holes to ensure efficient water discharge.
  • Three new, larger-diameter Colorbond metal downpipes replaced the original smaller pipes, linked to new 100mm PVC piping leading to the curb.
  • A retaining wall system constructed along the boundary, using concrete sleepers and galvanised steel posts, with auger holes drilled by an excavator to provide a sturdy barrier to contain the adjacent yard.
  • Efficient soil removal on-site, managed by a dumper for streamlined operations.

What Measures Can You Implement for Successful Water Management?

The newly established drainage system now effectively captures both surface and subsurface water at the property boundary, ensuring it is redirected away from the home. This solution offers the homeowner a durable, low-maintenance option that protects their foundation, flooring, and the financial investment in renovations.
